Try garage sales, consignment shops, craigslist, ebay, or a store that has a sale and coupons in the mailers. Good luck and have fun! Estate sales are also great! I got a beautiful oriental rug once and it was only $35 (could have been $500+)

I prefer thrift stores myself ~ followed by Target, who does seem to have some pretty amazing sales.

As the previoius respondent mentioned, decor is the cheapest at Ikea.

I’ve been buying my towels at Target or JcPenney for the past few years. Even their cheapest linens hold up better than any other manufacturer.

*The cheapest time of the year, however, to buy linens is in January. I know its off-season right now, but if you buy only the essentials now, you can score some good deals in January.

thrift stores – recycle items whenever possible. YOu can find lots of great buys and a can of spray paint will go a long way to refresh an old piece of furniture.
use books as accessories by buying old used ones and then cover them with wrapping paper in whatever color matches your room. Looks neat and crisp. I covered mine in red.
Also pick up cheap picture frames and make the art yourself to go in them. I used a couple of small branches and leaves from my backyard, painted them red, and then used woven jute-look shelf liner for the background set into plain black frames. Looks professional, but cost almost nothing!
also, for new stuff try Big Lots, Wal-Mart and Dollar General. Area rugs are usually inexpensive and can add a lot of warmth to a room as well as help define a certain space.
Have fun!

I’ve been super happy with my towels that I bought from Walmart. They were not the top, expensive brand, either, but a special they were running last fall during the back to school, stock the dorm season. They were $3. 97/each and still look new after a year. They’ve held up better than my $15/each department store Martex towels.

I prefer Walmart for the basics, but for true decor, TJ Maxx has great items at great prices. Better quality than Walmart or Kmart, and not much higher in price. Most of what TJ Maxx gets is overstocks from department stores. More unique items, too. I mean do you really want that really popular Walmart bathroom set that half of everybody else you know has?

Target sends their overstocks to Goodwill around here. So, it’s possible to find new items at Goodwill that originally were sold in Target. Prices are usually half of what Target’s original price. I’ve found lots of linens, throw pillows, and children’s clothes new with tags still on it from Target.

I have found Ralph Lauren closeouts at both TJ Maxx and Big Lots.

And, oddly enough, I just bought the prettiest framed pictures from Hancock Fabrics of all places. Large double matted prints in a heavy wood carved 5″-border frame – 24×36″ for $25 each. I didn’t even know they carried pictures. Went in there to buy quilt fabric and came home with pictures. LOL!
